A vast swamp was carefully managed in order to open up space for residential, recreational, and industrial facilities; National Iron & Steel Mills became the focal point of these efforts on September 1, 1962 with sectors including shipbuilding, sawmilling, timber production and oil-rig fabrication at its forefront.

From 1970-1990, Jurong Industrial Estate experienced rapid development through infrastructure investments and recreational facilities that aimed at increasing its attractiveness for workers – thus leading to significant advancements of public transport systems such as MRT and LRT rail networks
